Jean d'Eau
you knew how to hear the wind.
i saw you listen in between the birds
a punctuation mark, a song
an answer to the question i am holding here
(it was so long ago and now i ask)
i heard it too
i saw you notice i was with you then
and turn
and look across the understanding we had joined
i saw you recognize that you saw me
we were the same that night.
have you thought that i had been erased,
a cartoon you had doodled once yet never inked?
i know you managed this
i know i came to be the empty space
and i see why (of course, i heard it too)
the answer was so clear we didn't hesitate
we never wondered that we hadn't asked
(and am i last? have you covered even this?)
tonight i heard you listening to the wind
you rang along its length exactly as before
but did you notice how the air was filled?
and turn?
