Dialogues:
Conversations and Collaborations in the Spirit
Author's Preface

The term Dialogue as used in this collection means inner dialogue. The author realizes that, even with this clarification, a precise neaning is not given. What, however, is clear in that statement is what the term does not mean, which is ordinary, external, human vocal exchange. There is nothing ordinary nor external about the origin of any piece included in Dialogues: Conversations and Collaborations in the Spirit. That degree of is-not clarity is sufficient guidance from the author. As a by-product of his experience in reading these pieces the reader will decide for himself what the term may or may not mean, for human nature will prevail and he will not be able to prevent himself doing so. (If that should occur before he has seen this preface, he may then happen here and be advised it is intentional.)

Each title in this collection originates in one of three historical aggregates. Because this organization is useful for the author to maintain, and because it is given nowhere else at SPR and might by its citation at the base of each piece become confusing (or to the uninformed appear self-consciously mysterious), this preface includes a full explanation of these references:

Dialogue I : Dialogue fragments in this aggregate belong to the first epoch of recorded SPR dialogues, which is 1996-2005.
Nothing of this sort was committed to writing prior to that time, although these exchanges had occurred from early childhood. These were committed to paper by hand and, as a result, many are misplaced and some are almost certainly lost. Whether or not any fragment appears to be a fragment, it is: No Dialogue has ever been recorded from beginning to end, and all records are excerpts which, themselves, may have been excerpted before publication.
Dialogue II : This second aggregate of dialogue fragments begins with 2006 when the transcription papers for its predecessor had been misplaced, and a new record was begun.
The new digital-only record was lost in a computer meltdown, about 19 July 2006, referred to at
The Camel's Back (TCB) weblog as "the poker event". The only surviving fragments of aggregate number two are the few excerpts previously published at TCB (self-censored and edited).
Dialogue III : This [current] aggregate picks up when the hard-drive loss of July 2006 leaves off.

Readers interested in the phenomenon involved in the origin of the titles included in this collection may wish to also read a description of the author's initial experiences with spiritual transcription. This can be found in the
2006 Author's Afterward to the collection Idiot Wind. (Additionally, some prefaces to other collections at SPR provide additional detail.)
