Wisconsin Adventure Racing--Driftless Area

This year the Wisconsin Adventure Racing will be holding its first Driftless Zone WAR event on August 24th. Because of the nature of this event, the exact location is undisclosed until the event is held. This is a team event that requires skills and endurance in swimming, mountain-biking, kayak/canoeing (paddling), trekking, climbing, orienteering as well as "suprise events".

Much more information can be found at the Wisconsin Adventure Racing Website, including registration information, registration forms, rules, equipment, etc. If you are interested in participating, remember the registration deadline is July 18th, 2002 and you need to view the information at their website!

Biking will be held on a variety of terrain: back country roads, converted railroad trails, deep wooded areas and no trails at all!

The swimming portion of the race will include both open lake and river swimming.

Running, Trekking, orienteering, or even walking! The on foot course is very similar to the Biking portions of the race. One minute you could be walking along a nice gravel trail, and ten minutes from now you may be bushwhacking through an overgrown swamp!

The canoeing/kayaking will be on a river course only. The intended river can be smooth or rough, depending on rainfall. Contestants will need to be prepared to "portage" around fallen trees across the river or other obstacles.

There are some wonderful climb and rappel in store for contestants.

However, a by-pass course in available to those afraid of heights. The by-pass course WILL take longer than the climb...so contestants chance losing valuable time by taking it.

Surprises in the course are to be expected!

The course remains unknown to all the competitors and support teams until the pre-race meeting Friday Evening. Prior to this meeting, teams are told only the disciplines they must be able to do in order to compete, and the required equipment list, and an approximate time to complete the course.

The race takes between 9 and 12 hours to complete. The idea is simple: All teams leave the starting area at the same time and travel through numerous areas and types of terrain using different modes of travel. All along the course are numbered mandatory passport checkpoints that each team must check into in the correct order. Teams must check in with them all and work their way to the finish line as quickly as they can. All team members must arrive at all the checkpoints and cross the finish line together.

The first complete team that covers the course in the shortest time and crosses the finish line first is the winner. Not only are they the overall winner, but of course the winner of their class also. As well as the first team to cross the finish line of any other class is the winner of their class. Each complete remaining teams will be ranked according to their finishing time. Teams can only be ranked when all members have crossed the finish line.

This sounds like a blast...if you can take it!
