H.H. Bennett

Wisconsins Pioneer Photographic Artist (1843-1908)

Henry Hamilton Bennett has become known as one of Wisconsin's, and in fact the nation's, premier photographic artists. Born in 1843, Bennett lived nearly his whole life in Wisconsin. Though his intended profession was to be a carpenter a injury to his hand during the Civil War prevented this and he opened a studio in Wisconsin Dells (then known as Kilbourn City) and opened a portrait studio in 1875.

Bennetts greatest and most popular works are those of his beloved Wisconsin Dells, photographed at a time that captured the pristine nature of the area. He also refined and developed new techniques of photography, and developed stereo-scopic picture displays.
