After the Storm
with a poem by John L. Ames
There is the smell
of street dust
before the rain.
The day unravels
summer turns to heat.
Then thunder, heavy-footed
runs through the clouds
like an angry elephant.
The ground shakes.
Fresh air stiff at the edges
pours into the street
brightness, a jagged
branch of light
whip-cracks the sky.
I wait
with a wish
for a rainbow.
