Wisconsin River
The Wisconsin River is the largest river in Wisconsin and the namesake of the state, i.e., the state was named after the river.
The Wisconsin River stretches 430 miles from Lac Vieux Desert on the Wisconsin-Michigan boundary in the north to Prairie du Chien in south western Wisconsin.
This is the Petenwell Dam near Necedah.
The Wisconsin River has a vertical drop of 1050 feet. The river flows south and west to the Mississippi River and is broken by many falls and rapids, but is navigable to Portage, where it is connected to the Fox River by a short canal. The Wisconsin River is thus part of the continuous waterway that runs between Lake Michigan and the Mississippi River.
