WESTERN SAHARA

Ministering to Saharawi Refugees

I’m sure most of us have never heard of this story and the many pockets of refugees in our world. Our call is always to minister to needs in His name.

The sovereignty of the Western Sahara—a territory on the northwest coast of the African continent—has been disputed since 1975 when the Moroccan government forced entry, driving thousands of people from their homeland. The Saharawi are a group of eight Moorish, seminomadic tribes now living in refugee camps in Algeria as a result of this invasion.

Over 17,000 people live in these camps in the Algerian desert. Since most men have joined the Army in hopes of gaining a political solution to their displacement, the population of the camps is mostly comprised of women, children and the elderly. They must endure the harsh extremes of a desert environment including frequent sandstorms and water shortages, while also facing serious problems such as lack of medicine and minimal equipment for hospitals.

The Saharawi are traditional Muslims, and attempts to reach them with the gospel are relatively new. Working in partnership with other Christian organizations, American Baptists are eager to develop relationships with the Saharawi, and the work has already begun.

Initial support will help them to produce a Saharawi Prayer Guide. Its aim is to facilitate and increase an understanding of the Saharawi situation, supported by a strong network of prayer.

Physical, emotional and spiritual healing and education will be at the heart of our future contacts with these people.

A total of $5000 is needed for us at ABC to fully meet our commitment to grow in its relationship with the Saharawi refugees in Algeria.

Monetary resources are in demand around the world, but only energy and effort are required from the Christians of Juneau County to make God’s difference in meeting needs in our area. At First Baptist we’d love to join with you to get this done.
