EXPLANATION
Why have I incorporated some of our opportunities of the week as Thoughts for the Week? Simply because we are trying to illustrate the far flung as well as the nearby mission of the church, the reason we exist, that is, to meet needs. As these thoughts suggest, one way to let people know we are concerned about them is to identify with their physical as well as spiritual needs and seek to meet such needs. Tom Bandy, one of the foremost thinkers on methods to meet needs, recently wrote, "first experience the touch of the Holy and then go deeper into faith formation than ever before." These opportunities allow our partners to help people experience the "touch of the Holy."
In Bolivia today, an estimated 3.3 million people known as Quechuas live. Descendants of the Incas, they have historically lived in the high plains of the Andes Mountains and have maintained their own culture and language over the centuries.
More recently, some Quechuas have migrated to fertile lowlands at the base of the Andes, looking for improved agricultural and employment opportunities. Sadly, they are discriminated against because they do not know the Spanish language and do not have marketable skills to offer the workforce.
By ministering with sensitivity toward Quechua language and tradition, the Bolivia Baptist Union (UBB) will provide spiritual guidance to those who face such difficult and life changing transitions. The UBB will also prepare effective leaders to translate the Gospel of salvation in Christ throughout the high plains and lowlands of Bolivia. By equipping Quechuas for this ministry, the UBB will ensure that the communicative process will be compatible with Quechua cultural understanding.
Many Christian Quechuas have accepted the challenge to lead their people to walk with Jesus. With the prayers and support of American Baptists, Quechua church leaders can help expand the love of Christ throughout all Bolivia
Just $500 is needed this year for American Baptist International Ministries to fully meet our commitment here. What an amazingly small number to help with this gigantic mission.
Monetary resources are in demand around the world, but only energy and effort are required from the Christians of Juneau County to make the same difference in our area. At First Baptist wed love to join with you to get this done.
